Hello!

My name is Adam and I am a volunteer with the Manchester Oxfam campaigns group and I wanted to let you know about our current campaign as I think you might be exactly the people we need to help us!
I hope that you can use your knitting skills to help us achieve something memorable.

MOMM: 1400- PURLING POWER!
MANCHESTER OXFAM (GROUP)
MATERNAL MORTALITY (CAMPAIGN)

1400 is the number of mothers who die every day in the world because of the lack of doctors, nurses and midwives.
We are getting 1400 people in Manchester to knit a giant blanket made of 1400 woollen squares of 12 cm by 12 cm.
Each carefully knitted square represents a mother's life that could be saved if rich donor countries gave the aid they have already promised and if that aid was used to recruit, train and retain doctors, nurses and midwives for developing countries.
We will hand in the blanket to Downing Street to show that people in the UK want maternal mortality to be eradicated.
The blanket will be then exhibited in a prestigious venue in Manchester in October.

SO…DO YOUR BIT: KNIT!

The preferred size for the needles is between 3.5mm and 4.5mm and the preferred wool is double yarn (any colour, especially really bold ones are very welcome!).
Your final square should not be bigger than 12cmx12cm!
Once you have knitted your square, please send it to:Cornelia Reetz, Oxfam Campaigns office, 46-50 Oldham Street, Manchester, M4 1LE
- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ADD A NOTE WITH YOUR NAME, ADDRESS AND E-MAIL ADDRESS theotherwise we will not be able to add your square to blanket !!!

Thankyou for taking the time to read this, I hope maybe you will be willing to help. If you have any questions, please e-mail me and I will do my best to get back to you ASAP.

Stand up against poverty

Adam Webb.

Hello,

Sounds like a great idea. But is there a link that you can provide to your website so we can check out the details?

Why is it neccessary to send contact details? Surely a square is a square whoever it's knitted by?

Hi Adam,

Please can you check the square size as other sites are giving instructions for 9 inch squares. See here and this site has been asking for squares since January.

We're doing them in the Northants Rav group for Oxfam and they are definitely supposed to be 9 inches x 9inches.

Dutchoma, our local co-ordinator, has made it her personal challenge to beat Manchester's target of 1400! We don't need contact details for ours...

I don't want this to sound negative, but yell.com's nearest address is:
Unit 8, Smith Field Building, Oldham St, Piccadily, Manchester, Lancashire M1 1JR

It's the same street, but the post code is way off!!

Of course, this may be a completely separate part of the campaign, with another office and address, but I'd be happier sending my square to the address in the oxfam webpage.

Just my 2p worth, of course!!

Linda

I understand that after the 'petition' has been taken to Downing Street, the blanket will be separated into blankets of a normal size and will then be sold by Oxfam at various festivals to raise additional funds, (as well as keeping the numpties who turn up to festivals without sleeping bags warm!).
