Thanks for letting us know about this. Printing off details for notice board at work and will sort out some of my two's stuff. I can do hats.

Thank-you for the link, and MickyB, thanks for your comment as I hadn't even noticed the link to patterns, doh! I've been looking for that sort of bear pattern to knit for them as I seem to have tons of brown DK in my stash - think it all came from mum. Will be perfect for bears tho :D

i read this thread and i'm in tears, to think of newborns being wrapped in newspaper is heartbreaking, i'm not that competent at knitting but i'm going to start on a baby blanket (don't have to decrease) and give it my best shot, i will also ask my mum to start knitting baby cardigan/jumpers as well. What a start in life for these little un's, so unfair. Lets hope that we can at least make it a bit better for them.

Oh dear, problems here, tried knitting for this and due to arm it was going to take me forever, I shan't say I learned to crochet as such at the weekend but I managed to teach myself enough to do be able to do a baby cardi and hat, I'm very cackhanded but it's helped in the fact that I hold hook and yarn in right hand so it's elliminated the arm trouble. Here's the problem part.....I haven't joined it together because something was wrong, not tension, wool which was DK was very thick and more like aran, I'm sure it's big enough to fit maybe a one year old baby, no good for this purpose I would imagine :(
Am started on another I bought some 4 ply now, looks much better size, so should have something to show very soon.

Don't throw it away knitknack - the baby pack project do accept items for siblings etc, and as such are able to make use of larger garments as well as tiny ones.

And they aren't in 0-3 months for very long!!!

thank you knittingnanny :D
That's brilliant, hubby said to send it anyway they'd no doubt make use of it but I just thought if these little mites were coming out of hospital they'd need very little things. That's made me so chuffed I really didn't have anything to do with it other than bin it, how sad would that have been with my first crochet project.

just stumbled across this, but want to contribute. I'm going to search for buying some yarn in bulk to save on costs, but what type of yarn is best for this kind of thing (I'm a bit of a newbie)? Baby wool? Acrylic?
Thanks!

I'm using baby DK for most of mine, I buy it from my local charity shop for £1 per ball, or a soft acrylic 4 ply which again is £1 per ball.

Just thought I'd bump this one up to bring it to the attention of new members who might not otherwise find it

Just about to start some projects for this. I see I said last year that this would be my charity for 2007 and I'd try to send one parcel a month  Guess that means February's parcel need to be a double

Now where did I put those baby patterns ?

Hi

Am a newbie to this site but have just finished my first blanket for this project. Trouble is I went to their website and they have said 12" for the one side. Now have done a little more than 12" but when finished it looks really small. From one diamond edge to the other is 19" but never the less it looks really small. Were my two ever that small?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also is white an acceptable colour over in South Africa? I know it is not in some countries.

Asking the same 2 questions, I have knitted some patterned squares in white, it's what I had here, had no idea about it not being an accepted colour (imagine very, very sad emoticon inserted here) also 12" seems so tiny. Don't want to send a blanket if it can't be used because it's so small when I have the squares here to make it bigger.

I got a load of wool by placing an ad on my local freecycle group (http://www.freecycle.com) They have groups in/near most places now. I just posted to say I was doing some knitting for a baby charity and did anyone have anything suitable. It'll take a while to work my way through it, but it's nice to think it was just languishing and never to be used, but now will be knitted up to wrap up some of the wee mites

Hi everyone :D

I have been knitting like crazy for this charity and am just parcelling up the following.

3 blankets
2 cardigans
2 pairs of bootees
6 new bibs
4 new pairs of socks
4 bars of baby soap

In between I have completed a couple of dog coats for another charity I saw on here called "The Oldies Club". Hope to now start on a cardigan for myself for the summer. Then I will go back to the charity knitting. Its quite nice doing things for babies again. They knit up so quickly. I had completely forgotten this fact since my baby is now 30 years old

Best wishes to you all and happy knitting.

Hi, Esther, I sent my first parcel off a few weeks ago. I don't know how long surface mail takes, but with luck they should have it soon.

My contents were not unlike yours:

3 knitted jackets
1 knitted blanket
3 sleep suits (bought in Sainsbury's sale!)
1 bar of soap (I didn't put in more, because I thought it might send the postage up too high)
1 towel
1 changing mat (freebie that came with a magazine we get at work)
2 small teddies (Sainsbury sale)

This all neatly fitted in a medium size posting box from the local Post Office. I am currently making up another jacket, so I shall soon begin looking out for a few bargains to include, along with what I manage to knit over the next few weeks. I'm fortunate enough to have very young grandchildren to knit for, but it is still very satisfying to be able to contribute to this project.
