I've only just seen this post, I have been searching the net lately for a charity project for this year & had already decided on Bonnie Babies.

But thinking of those poor little mites being sent home wrapped in newspaper, well, it broke my heart

So I will dedicate myself to both charities this year, I have the time to spare & the little things really dont take long to make.

I'm sure in my cupboard, I have tons of old blankets, cot sheets etc that they can happily have too. I'm pretty snowed under this month, but will aim to have a box ready for them by April.

I am no the worlds greatest knitter, only took it back up late last year. But we can't have little 'uns wrapped in paper. Even If its just hats and booties I will do a parcel or two this year.

I've only just read this thread, how heartbreaking is that :???:
I'll be aiming to knit a few baby things to post during this year, it's the least I can do. It does make you value what you've got when you read things like this.

I'm definitely going to be knitting some stuff for this charity.

I've just looked on the blog and it looks like there is a new address to send the parcels to.

Thanks for posting that link up Sarah - I've already sent one big box of Lilly's old stuff out so will make sure the next one goes to this new address

The thought of the little tiny weeny ones going home in papers actually made me cry when I first read it (breastfeeding hormones don't help), some of those women have miles to walk to get back to their villages as well and I felt so much happier knowing the stuff goes direct - I read somewhere that a lot of big charities like Oxfam etc only 40% of what you donate actually goes to the people who need it - the rest pays for wages for people over here, shop rentals etc etc which to me is just wrong - I appreciate they have to pay costs but 40% just doesn't seem enough to me.

I like that I can send this direct to where it's needed most and know the little tiny babygrows that I adored on her will go to a tiny babe who really needs it.

I bought some baby coloured DK yesterday so if i get some time i'm going to start some crochet blankets tonight - what size crochet needle do i need for DK? Its only acrylic but i figured its still warm and washable - it actually feels really soft. Was going to look in the sales and get a few cotton vests as they collect those too. Will try some baby clothes when i'm less busy, but i need a 'no concentration' project at the moment, i get fidgity when watching telly otherwise and DH sighs at me  The Bertie scarf is complecated tho (well, its probably me but its my first lace and my first beaded project so i can't concentrate on telly while i'm doing it)

I usually use a 4mm crochet hook when using DK.

Well, as many as you know I was embarking on my very first sock knitting adventure BUT....that now takes a back seat for this. I'm not the greatest knitter (yet  ) but I'm sure even I can knit a few baby bits.

Can you imagine taking your baby home in newspaper. It's heartbreaking.

My feet can wait.....

absolutely heart breaking, am in search of patterns to make a start. Can only knit small things and slowly for the time being anyway, have some scraps here, can't think of a better way to put it to good use.

There is a basic baby hat pattern in the free Simply Knitting calendar.

It's written for Aran yarn, but I have used DK on 4mm needles (using the largest size instructions) and it's knitting up really well.

I am having a pause from the socks and shawls + other items I have OTN in order to get a parcel off to the baby pack project and also to Bonnie Babies. I am also going to enlist my friend's help, she has a humungous stash, so I am hoping to raid that as well as getting her knitting some items too!!!

Linda

I've already committed spare knitting time/wool to another charity, but I've got a couple of hundred grams of baby-suitable yarn (mainly acrylics, a couple of 'unknowns') if anyone knitting for this can use them.

ETA - taken

In addition to their blog, I found a link to their website with a few more details:
http://www.freewebs.com/babypackproject/

Most of the info is the same as what has already been discussed, but this site also has patterns and a few other tidbits.

I have one little cardi done now (and another OTN, I really enjoyed making it!) and am thinking my new knitting club will try to make a blanket, so hopefully we'll be sending them a nice parcel by springtime!

Thanks for the extra link Lindsey. I will have a go at making my first ever knitted teddy from their pattern.
